Raising Money for the Young Minds Mental Health Charity

10th October 2019

As it was Mental Health Day the School Council decided that as a school we would raise money for the Young Minds Charity by;

  1. Coming to school dressed in yellow.
  2. Each class to sell something yellow at the end of the day. Willow chose to sell Hedgehog bread, Maple and Oak cakes decorated yellow and Beech Crispy cakes in yellow cake cases.

This was to raise awareness of how important good mental health is for children and to keep talking about any worries or issues they might have. We also completed some “mindfulness” activities such as Cosmic Yoga throughout the week. Thank you to everyone for their efforts on the day, especially the School Council who ran the stalls at the end of the day.

Test Valley Borough Council Visit and Parent Roadshow

9th October 2019

A huge thank you to Test Valley Borough Council for coming in and carrying out workshops with each year group from Year R-6 on how we can all look after our planet more by reducing, reusing and recycling. All the children learned a great deal as well as the Test Valley members saying how the children at Vernham Dean were one of the most polite and knowledgeable group of children they have worked with.

The team also stayed after school to meet our parents to talk about Eco issues as well as giving them tools to support being more eco friendly such as fabric reusable shopping bags.

Home Eco Project

Sophie Cooper has been carrying out an Eco project at home and has encouraged the residents of Hatherden to recycle their waste. Well done Sophie!

Well done to our Year 5/6 Rugby team! They played against three teams and won two matches. One of our players showed real compassion to another team, volunteering to play for their team when they were a player down.

There are some exciting happenings going on at Vernham Dean Gillum’s at the moment. We are waiting with bated breath for the last two eggs to hatch into chicks in Willow.  Even the teachers can’t resist a cuddle with our chicks.

For Red Nose Day the children ( and staff!)  dressed in ‘all the colours of the rainbow’.
