School Closure

Due to poor weather conditions, the school is closed today.  We will re-open tomorrow when the snow has thawed.  There is snow day work on class web pages.  Please stay safe.

Anti-bullying Day

Today, 9th March is our annual anti-bullying day.  Throughout the day, we have been looking at our key message of STOP (Start Telling Other People).

Due to continuing adverse weather conditions, we have made the decision to remain closed on Friday 2nd March. We apologise for any inconvenience but the safety of our children and staff are paramount to us.

Chinese New Year

Let’s Recycle!

Maple class had visitors from Test Valley Borough Council to talk about the benefits of recycling.  They looked at how materials can be reused, even old chewing gum!

Bake Off 2018

This morning Year 5/6 set off to the village hall for Bake Off.  Unbeknown to the children, their technical challenge today would be making pizza including making fresh dough.

Music Mark School Member

This week we became a Music Mark School Member. This follows on from a recommendation from Hampshire Music Service. The recognition highlights our commitment to providing high quality music education for all children and  that music is valued in our school as part of a broad and balanced curriculum.

Harrow Way Dance Session

Beech Class were visited today by the Harrow Way School Dance Teacher.  In a creative approach to looking at gaming, the children performed a choreographed dance within an hour.  Part of this dance was created by small groups.


We had a wonderful disco with all the adults dancing too!


An Interesting Visit!

Mr Kerrison talked to the children today about his volunteer work delivering crucial blood to those who need it.  His told the children that his work can happen at anytime in the day or night.  He also talked to the children about his trip around India on a motor bike and the poverty he saw on his travels.

How to stay safe with Hampshire Fire and Rescue

Year 5/6 spent the morning with Hampshire Fire and Rescue to learn about fire safety within the home.

Our community PCSOs came to talk to Year 5/6 about staying safe online when using social media, and about using mobile phones responsibly to stay safe.


We Remember

Today we took our poppies we have been making and created a large poppy.  Afterwards, we had two minute silence and a prayer.

Punch and Judy Visit the School

As part of our Victorian Creative Curriculum, Punch and Judy visited the school.  This was an adapted version as the original was written originally for adults.

Harvest Festival Service

It was lovely to see so many parents join us for the walk up the hill to church.  The sun came out and we were able to have our service with the church door left open to let in the warm afternoon.

What a Sport!

Catch the Pigeon (for those old enough to remember Whacky Races)

Yesterday, the school had a visiting racing pigeon land for a rest.  Thank you to one of our families for phoning the number on the tag and looking after him last night.  His race started off in France with the finishing line to be in Bristol.   He obviously decided that Vernham Dean Primary was a friendly place to stop for bed and breakfast when he was too exhausted to continue.

This morning, after five star luxury accommodation and a Michelin star breakfast,  he returned to school to be released.  The children were delighted to start their day waving him off.

Keeping Active With No Football Friday

Our lunchtime today was a host of activities and all the staff came out to play.  Even Miss Thompson was seen to be skipping!

Year R Garden Party

After picking strawberries at St Mary Bourne, making and scones, Year R enjoyed sitting with parents to eat their wares.

Moorhen Rescue!

Today we had some visitors to the school…thankfully one of our families have offered to take them home and look after them.

First of Our Enterprise Produce For Sale

Despite the cold, rain and the recent high winds, the first our enterprise produce us going up for sale tomorrow.  The gardening equipment the children have used is new to the school and was paid for by money  from the School House Trust.

Year 6’s Day Out

A fun filled day with a difference!  Year 6 had an Aeronautics day which included flying a flight simulator and sitting in a business jet all courtesy of the charity Aerobility and the Aeronautical Society.

Art Club

Art Club have produced some beautiful artwork after studying pieces by Monet and Kandinsky with Mrs Hall.

Saxon League Rugby

Yesterday, we played our final Saxon League match which was held at Smannell.  The team was on fire and really excelled themselves – all the staff area exceptionally  proud of the team.  The scores were:

Kit Malthouse MP’s Visit

Kit Malthouse MP visited our school today to have a look around.  He spent time talking to the children in all the classes in order to find out about the things they were learning.  This included an extended stop with Year 5/6  explaining where he sits in the House of Commons.  They thought it was funny that his mother texts him to sit up straight when she sees him on the Parliament Channel!

Parliament comes to Beech Class!

Parliament loan out a box to schools to introduce children to the work Parliament do.  The box creates memorable experiences by inspiring debate and deepening understanding of The House of Commons and The House of Lords.  Currently our Year 5/6 are using this box in their Health and Citizenship unit of work on ‘Who’s in Charge?’

From Garden to Bowl!

Over the winter the school has been growing leeks and yesterday we harvested (extremely excitedly).  Apart from many families having leeks for dinner yesterday, Year R picked some and made leek and potato soup this morning – delicious!


Planting Everywhere

Over the last couple of days, the school has been planting in different containers, even some unusual ones!  We hope to later to be able to open (for one day only) our very own Vernham Dean Primary Garden Centre.

RSPCA Cake Sale

This morning our school was awash with the most beautiful cakes ready for our cake sale in aid of the RSPCA.  Our Smart School Council voted not only on which national charity they wanted to support but also how the money would be raised.  Well done to all the children’s efforts (and mums, dads and grandparents too).

National Fund Raising Day

The Smart School Council chose the Charites they would most like to fundraise for this year, then all the children in the school voted for their choice and activity. So our National Fund Raising Day on Friday 7th April will be a cake sale for the RSPCA.

Chinese New Year

Year R have been learning lots about Chinese New Year and were treated to the delights of Carol Ward’s Chinese cooking this afternoon to celebrate. Carol, who leads our PTA, cooked: chicken and sweetcorn soup, spring rolls and sweet and sour pork. A huge thank you to Carol for her kindness…can you come back next year please?

Warburtons Visit Year 3/4

Today Warburtons visited Oak class to demonstrate how to make a balanced sandwich.  First of all the children looked at the different food groups then used this knowledge to make a balanced food group sandwich.  Hygiene, alongside food safety was forefront and the children were delighted to wear Warburton aprons and hair nets.

Open Afternoon
